Web Design Mistakes To Watch Out For

Posted by amm on Tuesday, 22 June, 2010

People who design their own websites instead of employing a web design company often make the same mistakes. Mistakes that you should avoid making include the following…

Do not center all your text and everything else on the web pages, because it looks amateurish. Books and magazines usually have the text running from left to right, beginning at the left margin, and people are used to that format. When visitors are faced with a large amount of centered text, they think it looks odd and may click on their web browser’s back button because they simply are not used to the look of large chunks of text which has been centered.

Do not use background music on your website because it will mean that your site will take a lot longer to load and it is hard to choose music that will appeal to everyone. Your visitors might even leave  if the music playing while they are waiting for your site to load is displeasing and they feel they are being forced to listen to it. A better option if you must have music on your site is to have a noticeable play button at the top of the pages that the visitors can use to start and stop the music

Do not rely on JavaScript for any essential parts of your website design because approximately 20% of web users either cannot run JavaScript or choose not to. Any problems which a visitor to your site encounters sends a clear message to them that you are not a real professional who takes the time to fix the problems or update the material you are presenting. The use of JavaScript, then, means that you might lose twenty percent of your visitors before they have looked over the content of your web pages.

Do not design a full flash website if you want high rankings in search engines because search engines, not being able to read the content on flash websites, tend not to rank these types of sites as highly as mainly text and image based sites. You can use flash, but use it sparingly, and be sure that you also include a large amount of text on your site. If you ignore this advice then you will hardly get any visitors from Google, Yahoo and Bing, which are the best sources of getting visitors to your website.

Making The Right Decision For New Online Business Venture

Posted by amm on Friday, 21 May, 2010

A little while ago I was thinking about starting up my own company.

It seems to run in the family as both my brother and sister own their own companies, so in all honesty sometimes I feel like the odd one out.

I wanted a business that I could run myself and preferably I could run from home. I had a few thoughts about what I would like to do and my favourite idea was to get a website up and running where I could sell filled children’s party bags.

Even though my kids are all grown up, I can still remember the nightmare it was trying to organise their party bags.  It would seem that children nowadays are so fussy about what they want in a party bag. In my day a piece of cake and a few pens and paper was ample, but things have moved on and children unfortunately expect a great deal more in their party bags.

I started researching suppliers and was lucky to find a local wholesaler. I put in a small order and organised four different party bags, which were aimed at children aged between 3 and 8 years old.  Then I was thinking that the party isn’t just about party bags, but I could get a website built that covered the whole party event. I could also sell balloons, party accessories, birthday cakes and even games for the kids to play.

Now it just so happens that my brother’s business is web design and they specialise in search engine optimisation, so that saved me a whole heap of problems searching around for a reliable company to start me on my way to my first million.

My sister owns a local newsagents, so to maximise my sales, the potential was also there to sell items from her shop.

Things were gradually coming together and I was really excited about my future. However, as with everything in life, money was the key element and to get the business up and running would have set me back at least 15K.  As I hadn’t worked for a couple of years finding this sort of money was going to be quite a task.

Then out of the blue my brother’s company offered me a job, which was very welcome. With me now in full time employment, my plan for a website is still simmering in the background, and I am sure that within the next couple of years I will be able to get it back on track, but for now I am happy being at work and enjoying the extra freedom that money brings.

Make sure that you are certain about the specifications of the website. One of the most common reasons for the increased of price is because there are changes to the features or specifications of the website in the latter stages of the development. Therefore it is important for you to understand the specifications completely and make sure that the developers know what you want. Remember, the longer you delay the project, the higher the cost will be.

  • Pay per Click Campaigns
  • Marketing Advice

And that only touches on the surface. The great news is that  website designers have the whole package covered. Whether you want a one page simple site or a fully outfitted content management system, they can usually help you. Plus you’ll get all the support you need until you are confident administering your site alone.

Apart from the above stated points, let’s come to some technical aspects. Generally there are ten steps:

- The idea or prospective
– Information and Content.
– Keywords
– Domain Naming
– Design
– Hosting
– Integration
– SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
– Internet Marketing
– Videos, CDs, Photography.

Give the website design agency enough time to develop the site. If you give them a tight timeline, they will charge you more. So give them enough time to work on it to reduce the overall cost of the project.

Before you engage a particular agency, make sure that you spend some time to do a research. Do a search on Google and shortlist a few agencies. Let them know your requirements and select the one that you feel comfortable with.

Essential Design Checklist for Your Business Website

Posted by amm on Saturday, 27 March, 2010

In business, even seemingly tiny details can make a big difference. Your company’s website design is your presentation of yourself to the world. Here are five of the most important guidelines to check to assure that your business website will perform as it should.

1) Never use splash pages

Always remember that we attract our site’s visitors for a specific purpose, and we want nothing to stand in the way of achieving that goal as efficiently as possible. A splash page, which you probably have encountered on occassion, is a landing page that is no more than decoration. Usually, they are meant to be visually attractive (in other words, “make a splash”). The only meaningful content they have is a phrase such as “click here to enter this site.” Why add the frustration of one additional click between your landing page and the desired outcome on the part of the site visitor? Get those visitors through that virtual door immediately.

2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements

Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable website real estate. Instead, provide more valueable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content, and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy.

3) Have a simple and clear navigation

You have to provide a simple and very straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don’t know how to navigate, they will leave your site.

4) Let your visitors see where they are on the site

When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the site easily. Don’t confuse your visitors because confusion means “abandon ship”!

5) Use audio only for clear purposes

If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they’re not annoyed by some sound looping on and on at your website. If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it — volume or muting controls would work fine.
